I am here with Madeline Mrozek, the fantabulous narrator of “F” is for Fred, to talk with her about audiobooks, her process, and private investigators.

Which character is your favorite to voice? Sofia, Ms. Soloff, or Aiden?

See, here’s the thing…I love bringing ALL of the characters in the Malibu Mysteries to life so it would be impossible for me to choose just one.  They’re quirky, funny and sometimes downright crazy but they’re always REAL, and I just love that.  Each book in the Malibu Mysteries series always has at least one or two “co-stars” I find particularly enjoyable to bring to life and F Is For Fred definitely brings forth that tradition.  Sofia’s niece, Violet and Mrs. Solov were two of my faves this time.  Mainly because Violet is sassy and brave and reminds me so much of my granddaughter, Molly Rose!  And then there’s Mrs. Solov, who’s dramatic and totally “extra”…just like ME 😉

How would a non-me person hire you to produce an audiobook?

Thanks for asking!  All interested parties are more than welcome to contact me via my website at www.madelinemrozeknarrator.com or my narrator profile on www.acx.com.  Feel free to hit me up on Facebook and Twitter as well!

Which series that you have narrated is most similar to the Maloney Mystery series?

With Malibu Beach and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood as the backdrops for the crime-solving antics between a former childhood television star turned PI and her surly but sexy partner…I’d have to say the Malibu Mysteries are in a league of their own!

When do you plan on switching careers to become a private investigator in Malibu?

Trust me, being an audiobook narrator delivers the same degree of adventure and excitement but with a much lower risk of getting shot at…so far, anyway!  I’m more than happy staying put in my booth, where it’s quiet, climate-controlled and SAFE!

What was the hardest part of my books to read?

Nothing.  And I mean that!   Each book in the series brings something fresh, original and fun into my world and I have a complete and utter blast narrating every word.  Rebecca and Sean have a writing style that feels just like a cozy pair of slippers to me and when I get behind the microphone to bring it all to life for listeners, it truly feels effortless.

Oh, wait!  I just thought of something!  It IS a bit difficult sometimes when I’m trying to stay on schedule and I have to keep stopping my recording because I’m laughing too hard!  Seriously, there are scenes in every book that require multiple takes due to my snort-laughing.  It’s a very bittersweet experience but a total “champagne” problem so you’ll get no complaints about it from me!

What is your favorite audiobook?

Nope, can’t do it.  Waaaay too many faves for me to choose just one.  The audiobook movement has taken the world by storm and I’m thrilled to be on this ride as both a narrator and a listener.  Storytelling is such a unique craft and every narrator brings something different to the table by adding their own special “spice” to the “stew”, and I just adore that.  Of course, we couldn’t do what we do without the gift of such amazing stories written by incredible authors.  When both the story and the narrator are perfectly matched, something special happens…and it’s magical…and THOSE are my favorite audiobooks, definitely.

How many times did you read “F” is for Fred while you made the audiobook?

Before I begin recording an audiobook, I just read the story for fun.  I like to relax with it and feel the overall vibe and get to know the characters well before I prep it for recording.  As a life-long avid reader, I really enjoy doing this, plus it enables me to make my best choices for bringing the characters to life in addition to the tone and pacing of the story.  During the production process, I read and re-read the story quite a bit because something new and interesting always seems to reveal itself and that just helps me give my best possible performance.
